Okay, so maybe you're not as excited as I am, but we hope this will brighten up your week. WvDial attempts to make the previously rather complicated configuration of Linux dial-up networking as simple as phone number - username - password. That means companies or individuals can, if they want, take all the code in WvDial and use it in a product without giving anyone their own source code.

That means you have to give out the source code to your changes. That also means that we or anyone can build a product based on the modified WvDial, and although the source code to WvDial must be provided, the rest of the system does not have to be L GPL'd. We think that this is a fair way to share this software, because it guarantees that everyone can fix bugs and when anyone does, everyone can get the patch.

Naturally none of that is legally binding. Please read it carefully before distributing or worse, not distributing modified copies of WvDial, because the rules aren't quite as simple as I've made them sound. This is not too difficult as long as you have a few things installed on your Linux system: - pppd 2. Almost any halfway modern Linux system should have all of these.

First, check the Makefile to see if everything looks okay to you. That's probably right for most systems. To build and install WvDial, then: make make install Assuming you don't have any compile errors and really, you shouldn't, right? WvDial is a Point-to-Point Protocol dialer: it dials a modem and starts ppp in order to connect to the Internet. Install the wvdial package. It helps in generating the configuration file needed by wvdial.

It is safe to run wvdialconf if a configuration file already exists. In that case, only the Modem, Baud, Init, and Init2 options are changed in the [Dialer Defaults] section, and only if autodetection is successful.

After you have filled in your login information, wvdial ought to work. Today's Posts. Quick Links. Search Forums. Show Threads. Show Posts. Here is a com- plete list of settings that wvdial understands: Modem The location of the device that wvdial should use as your modem.

Baud The speed at which wvdial will communicate with your modem. The default is baud. Init9 wvdial can use up to nine initialization strings to set up your modem. Before dialing, these strings are sent to the modem in numerical order. These are particularly useful when specifying multiple sections.

See above for an example that uses Init3 to turn the modem's speaker off. The default is "ATZ" for Init1. This repository has been archived by the owner. It is now read-only. Star Permalink master.
